AS EXPECTED, MY CONVERSATION with Captain Matteo was brief. He knew of the Lightkeep request and had approved it. He asked if I needed any help or further information, and I told him I didn’t. He suggested certain weapons and equipment, and I agreed. He told me to be careful, and to report back to him when the mission was complete. I told him I would.

Despite the brevity of his speech, the Captain always conveyed warmth and stability, to me and to all his soldiers. Maybe it was his reassuring bulk in uniform, or his habit of stroking his jaw as he listened. Maybe it was that we had seen him train and fight, and we knew that he was the toughest warrior we knew. Maybe it was that he could be trusted with any secret, or trusted to stand alone to represent his soldiers. Maybe it was that some of us had seen him cry, on the day several years ago when he was forced to kill a feral cat, sick and crazed with lyssa, that had wandered into the guard house. Whatever it was, I felt calm and sure of myself when I left his office. In three days I would carry out Dase’s request.
